Job Description

The Teacher of Music delivers high-quality music education to students within a school setting. This role involves planning, preparing, and delivering engaging lessons that meet the needs of a diverse student body across key stages. The postholder supports the development of students’ musical skills, knowledge, and appreciation through practical and theoretical teaching approaches. The Teacher of Music contributes to the broader life of the school by participating in extra-curricular activities such as choirs, ensembles, concerts, and school productions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver effective music lessons that align with the curriculum and assessment criteria.
  • Assess and monitor student progress, providing constructive feedback and maintaining accurate records.
  • Develop students’ practical skills in performance, composition, and musicianship.
  • Incorporate a range of teaching methods and resources to accommodate varied learning styles.
  • Promote a positive learning environment that encourages creativity, collaboration, and respect.
  • Organise and lead extra-curricular music activities, including rehearsals and performances.
  • Maintain professional standards of behaviour and safeguarding in line with school policies.
  • Engage with parents, carers, and colleagues to support student development and wellbeing.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, training sessions, and school events as required.

Required Qualifications

  • A recognised teaching qualification suitable for the secondary education sector (for example, Qualified Teacher Status or equivalent).
  • A formal qualification in Music such as a degree or diploma.

Education

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Music or a closely related subject.
  • Qualified Teacher Status or equivalent certification in education is essential.

Experience

  • Previous teaching experience in a secondary school setting is highly desirable.
  • Experience delivering the national curriculum and preparing students for public examinations in Music.
  • Proven ability to manage classroom behaviour effectively and maintain student engagement.
