If you’re the kind of person who can walk into a room, read it in seconds, and calmly steer things back on track when emotions run high, primary schools near you are crying out for your skills.

Teenagers don’t always get it right, and that’s where Behaviour Mentors come in. You’ll be the steady voice, the calm presence, the “let’s reset and try again” adult who helps students turn tough moments into positive ones.

What you’ll be doing day to day

Every school is different, but here’s what the role usually looks like.

Supporting behaviour plans
You’ll work closely with teachers and pastoral teams to keep students engaged, regulated, and ready to learn. That might mean checking in with a student before lessons, helping them settle after a wobble, or keeping routines consistent so they can focus.

1:1 and small-group work
Some students need a little more guidance. You might run short sessions on regulating emotions, confidence building, or getting students back into lessons calmly and safely.

Positive reintegration
When students step out of lessons, your job is to help them reset, reflect, and return in a better headspace. No lectures, no judgement, just clear boundaries and supportive conversations.

De-escalation and relationship building
The big one. You’ll be the person who stays calm when situations get loud. Your approach, tone, and ability to build trust will make all the difference for students who struggle with behaviour, attendance, or confidence.

Being the trusted adult
Schools need people who students can rely on, who won’t take things personally, and who can see past the behaviour to the young person underneath. If that sounds like you, this is a role where you’ll genuinely make an impact.

This role’s for you if you…

  • Have experience working with young people, whether in schools, youth work, sports coaching, mentoring, or care

  • Can stay calm under pressure

  • Know how to diffuse tensions before they grow

  • Can follow behaviour plans and instructions confidently

  • Believe every young person deserves a fresh start and a fair chance

What you’ll get from Protocol Education

We won’t just place you and disappear. You’ll have a local consultant cheering you on and making sure you’re in schools that value your work.
You’ll also get access to free training, including behaviour support modules and the chance to become Thrive trained. If you’re not Thrive trained yet, let me know, we can get that set up for you. Schools love it, and it takes your profile up a notch.

Why schools need Behaviour Mentors right now

Secondary behaviour teams are stretched. Students need calm, confident adults who can help them regulate, rebuild trust, and get back into learning. You’ll be a key part of that puzzle, and honestly, schools appreciate Behaviour Mentors more than you’d think.

If you’re ready to make a real impact, we’ll match you with a school that respects you, supports you, and values what you bring.
