Job Title: Behavioural Support Teaching Assistant
Location: York
Salary: £89 – £105 per day
Contract: Full-time, Part-time, Long-Term, Short-term
Start Date: ASAP and September Start
In some classrooms, progress looks different. It’s a pupil walking in without refusing. Making it through a lesson without flipping a chair. Trusting an adult for the first time in weeks. If that speaks to you, read on.
We’re working with a specialist school in York that supports pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs (SEMH). They’re looking for a Behavioural Support Assistant, who is confident in de-escalation and trauma-informed practice, to make a difference where it really counts.
The role includes:
- Supporting students with complex behavioural needs (often linked to trauma, autism, ADHD, or attachment difficulties)
- Helping to implement behaviour support plans and positive intervention strategies
- Building trust and consistency, being that steady adult pupils can rely on
- Working closely with pastoral staff, SENCOs, and therapists to deliver joined-up support
- Celebrating the small wins and modelling calm, respectful communication, even when things get tough
What we are looking for:
- Experience in behavioural support, whether in a PRU, SEND school, youth work, similar role or personal experience
- A calm, confident presence and the ability to not take things personally
- Practical understanding of trauma-informed care, de-escalation, or Team Teach (training available)
- Flexibility, patience, and a firm-but-fair approach to behaviour management
- A genuine passion for helping pupils rebuild trust in school and in themselves
- A passion for inclusive education and a desire to make a positive impact
- A valid Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check or willingness to obtain one
What Protocol Education offers:
- Weekly pay through PAYE (no umbrella companies)
- FREE Thrive and de-escalation training via our CPD Academy
- A consultant who gets SEND and will advocate for the right fit
- Long-term roles in schools that understand the value of behaviour specialists
Make an impact, not just a timetable. This isn’t just a job, it’s a chance to help pupils who’ve been written off elsewhere feel seen, heard, and supported.
