Protocol Education is seeking a dedicated and resilient Higher Level Teaching Assistant to work within a Pupil Referral Unit in Ferryhill from September 2026.
This is more than a classroom support role. You’ll have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference to pupils who may have struggled within traditional education.
Working alongside experienced teachers and support staff, you'll help create a structured, positive environment where pupils can re-engage with learning, develop their confidence and work towards their goals.

- Monday-Friday
- Working hours between 8:30am-3:30pm and 8:30am-4:30pm
- Term-time only
- Long-term opportunity with permanent prospects
Your responsibilities
- Lead lessons and learning activities
- Provide classroom cover when required
- Deliver individual and small-group interventions
- Support pupils with SEND and SEMH needs
- Promote positive behaviour and engagement
- Help pupils develop social, emotional and learning skills
- Adapt activities to meet individual needs
- Maintain a calm, structured classroom environment
- Build trusting relationships with pupils
- Work closely with teachers and pastoral staff
We're looking for someone who
- Has an HLTA qualification or significant TA experience
- Is confident leading lessons
- Has strong behaviour management skills
- Is resilient and able to remain calm under pressure
- Understands the importance of consistency and boundaries
- Can build positive relationships with young people
- Is passionate about giving pupils a fresh start
- Has experience in SEND, SEMH, PRU or challenging educational settings
