Protocol Education is recruiting an experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join a supportive Pupil Referral Unit in Ferryhill from September 2026.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Teaching Assistant or HLTA who is passionate about supporting young people who may have faced challenges within mainstream education. You’ll play an important role in helping pupils rebuild confidence, develop positive attitudes towards learning and achieve their potential.

Role Details

  • Full-time
  • September 2026 start
  • Monday-Friday
  • Working hours between 8:30am-3:30pm and 8:30am-4:30pm
  • Term-time only
  • Long-term opportunity with permanent prospects

Your responsibilities

  • Covering lessons and leading classes during teacher absence
  • Delivering targeted interventions and engaging learning activities
  • Supporting pupils with SEND, SEMH and additional learning needs
  • Helping pupils re-engage with education and develop positive routines
  • Managing challenging behaviour calmly and consistently
  • Supporting lesson preparation and classroom organisation
  • Building strong, trusting relationships with pupils
  • Working closely with teachers and wider support staff

We're looking for someone who

  • Holds an HLTA qualification or has significant classroom experience
  • Has experience working with challenging behaviour, SEND or SEMH
  • Is confident leading learning independently
  • Is calm, patient and resilient
  • Has strong behaviour management skills
  • Can build positive relationships with young people
  • Is committed to helping every pupil make progress
