Higher Level Teaching Assistant – Gateshead (Full-Time)

Protocol Education is working with a number of welcoming primary schools across Gateshead to recruit experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs) for full-time positions starting this September.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Teaching Assistant who is ready to take on greater responsibility, lead learning activities and provide classroom cover when required. We are looking for confident and adaptable HLTAs who can work effectively across different year groups.

Role Details

• Full-time
• September 2026 start
• Monday-Friday
• Working hours between 8:30am-3:30pm and 8:30am-4:30pm
• Term-time only
• Long-term positions with permanent opportunities available

What you'll be doing

• Delivering pre-planned lessons when teachers are absent
• Leading phonics, literacy and numeracy interventions
• Supporting children with SEND and additional needs
• Monitoring progress and sharing feedback with teaching staff
• Promoting positive behaviour and engagement
• Supporting learning across EYFS, KS1 and KS2
• Working closely with teachers and wider school teams

We're looking for someone who

• Holds an HLTA qualification or has relevant equivalent experience
• Has strong previous classroom experience
• Is confident leading whole-class activities
• Has effective behaviour management skills
• Is flexible, organised and reliable
• Has a genuine passion for supporting children's learning
