Higher Level Teaching Assistant – Gateshead Primary Schools

Protocol Education is looking for Higher Level Teaching Assistants to join primary schools across Gateshead from September 2026.

We're seeking experienced education professionals who are comfortable taking responsibility for learning, leading interventions and providing teacher cover. With opportunities across different year groups, this role offers plenty of variety and the chance to develop your classroom experience.

Position Details

• Full-time
• September 2026 start
• Monday-Friday
• Term-time only
• 8:30am-3:30pm or 8:30am-4:30pm working hours
• Long-term assignments
• Potential permanent opportunities

Key Responsibilities

• Taking classes for planned lessons when required
• Delivering small-group interventions
• Supporting phonics, reading, writing and maths
• Helping pupils with SEND access learning
• Feeding back on pupil development and progress
• Supporting positive behaviour
• Working across EYFS, KS1 and KS2
• Collaborating with teachers and support staff

What we're looking for

• HLTA qualification or comparable classroom experience
• Previous experience within a primary school
• Confidence leading groups and whole classes
• Strong classroom and behaviour management
• A flexible and proactive approach
• Excellent communication and organisation skills
