1:1 Support Assistant

Location: Durham
Job Type: Temporary
Reference: dewfw
Salary: £89.35 - £100/day
Job Published: 10 December 2025

Some pupils need someone who’s steady, unshakeable, and genuinely gets what’s going on beneath the behaviour. If that sounds like you, this specialist school in Durham would love to meet you.

We’re working with a brilliant setting that supports pupils with complex behavioural needs, often linked to trauma, autism, or social and emotional needs. They’re looking for a 1:1 Behavioural Support Assistant who can build trust, stay patient, and help a young person feel safe enough to learn again.

What your day might look like

  • Working 1:1 with a pupil who needs consistent, calm support

  • Helping them make sense of routines, transitions, and tricky moments

  • Using de-escalation strategies and therapeutic approaches to keep everyone feeling safe

  • Collaborating closely with the SENCO, therapists, and teaching staff

  • Celebrating the small wins that mean everything in a specialist environment

Who we’re looking for

  • Someone who stays cool and kind, even when behaviour escalates

  • Experience with SEMH, trauma-informed practice, PRU settings, or SEND helps, but attitude and approach matter most

  • A reflective practitioner who understands that behaviour is communication

  • A team player with strong communication skills and a willingness to learn

What you get with Protocol Education

  • Weekly PAYE pay, no umbrella companies

  • Free access to our CPD Academy, including behaviour, de-escalation, and SEMH training

  • A consultant who genuinely understands specialist settings

  • Opportunities across SEND, SEMH, and alternative provisions

  • Smooth registration and ongoing support

  • Referral bonuses when you recommend great people

One more thing…

Are you Thrive trained? If not, we can offer it to you completely free. Schools love it, and it makes a real difference when supporting pupils with emotional and behavioural needs.
