SEND Teaching Assistant – Sunderland
Full-Time | Term Time Only | September Start

Are you passionate about supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)? Do you want to play a vital role in helping young people thrive academically, socially, and emotionally?

Protocol Education is working closely with a specialist school in Sunderland that caters to pupils with a range of additional needs, including autism, ADHD, speech and language difficulties, and SEMH (social, emotional, and mental health) needs. We are seeking a SEND Teaching Assistant to provide consistent, nurturing support to students across Key Stages 1 to 4.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Supporting pupils on a one-to-one or small group basis, both in and out of the classroom

  • Assisting with learning activities, personal care (if required), and emotional regulation

  • Working alongside the class teacher and SENCO to adapt resources and deliver individualised support

  • Building positive relationships with pupils, promoting confidence and independence

  • Using behaviour support strategies to help manage challenging situations calmly and effectively

The Ideal Candidate Will:

  • Have experience working with children or young people with SEND, either in a school, care, or support setting

  • Be patient, empathetic, and resilient

  • Be comfortable supporting pupils with complex needs and/or behaviours that challenge

  • Understand safeguarding and be committed to the wellbeing of all students

  • Have relevant training (e.g., Team Teach, Autism Awareness, Makaton) or a willingness to learn
