SEMH Specialist

Location: Bristol
Job Type: Contract
Reference: 311022620
Salary: £89 - £97/day + PAYE & £50 for Teacher Referral
Job Published: 25 March 2026

Protocol Education is working closely with welcoming primary schools across BS6 to find compassionate, resilient and consistent SEMH Learning Support Staff who understand that behaviour is communication.

We’re looking for Teaching Assistants, Learning Support Assistants, SEND support staff and intervention specialists who are confident supporting children with social, emotional and mental health needs. This is about more than classroom help, it’s about building trust, creating calm and being the steady presence a child can rely on.

You’ll mainly support pupils across KS1, with some EYFS and KS2 where needed, working one-to-one or in small groups. Many of the children you’ll work with may struggle with emotional regulation, attachment, anxiety or behavioural challenges. Your role will focus on helping them feel safe, understood and ready to learn.

That might mean supporting structured routines, using de-escalation strategies, implementing behaviour plans or creating opportunities for emotional check-ins throughout the day. Alongside this, you’ll help pupils access early learning, phonics, number work and classroom activities in ways that feel manageable and positive for them.

At Protocol Education, we pride ourselves on matching support staff to roles that genuinely suit their experience and availability, whether short-term consistency or longer-term stability. You’ll also have a consultant who understands the demands and rewards of SEMH support, and who’s there to back you properly.

You’ll be joining schools with inclusive, nurturing cultures where teamwork matters and staff wellbeing isn’t just a poster on the wall.

If you’re someone who stays calm in the storm, believes in second chances and finds real fulfilment in helping children regulate, rebuild confidence and re-engage with learning, this could be the perfect next step.

Why choose Protocol Education?

• Flexible work, choose where and when you work
• Paid per day, with weekly pay
• Local primary schools, no long commutes
• Dedicated consultants who support you and help you grow within education

Pay: £89 to £97 per day
Location: BS6

A bit about you:
• Comfortable supporting children aged 4 to 7
• Patient, calm and nurturing in the classroom
• Friendly, approachable and reassuring for young learners
• Happy to adapt and support where needed
• Understanding of children’s needs, especially varying degrees of SEMH, SEND and additional needs

What we need to clear you
• Passport
• Two proofs of address, such as a driving licence, utility bill, council tax bill or P45/P60
• CV covering the last 10 years of work or education, with any gaps explained
• Two years of references, including childcare where applicable
• OSPC if you’ve lived overseas for three months or more in the last five years

If this sounds like your kind of KS1 role, we’d love to chat and help you find a school where you’ll feel supported, valued and excited to start the day.
