Higher Level Teaching Assistant (SEND) – Sunderland

We’re supporting a specialist provision in Sunderland that works with autistic learners and pupils with complex needs. Their approach centres on structure, understanding, and high-quality, individualised support that helps every child succeed.
They’re looking for a skilled Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) who can bring expertise, initiative, and a nurturing presence to the classroom someone who’s confident leading groups, supporting learning plans, and working collaboratively with teachers and therapists.
In this role, you’ll:

Lead small group sessions and targeted interventions

Provide 1:1 support for pupils with autism and complex learning needs

Support teachers with planning, delivery, and assessment

Help to implement structured routines and positive behaviour strategies

Model best practice for other support staff
We’d love to hear from you if you have:

HLTA qualification or equivalent experience leading learning activities

Proven experience working with pupils with SEND, particularly autism and complex needs

Confidence in behaviour support and communication strategies (PECS, Makaton, or similar)

A positive, flexible attitude and a genuine passion for making a difference
